Toronto Star, Oct 8 (Michele Lansberg):
Dumping Garbage in a Hole? The Plan Just Stinks
I'm voting for garbage guy.

Oh, I know, mayoral candidate Tooker Gomberg has lots of other serious issues in his platform: traffic, transit, the arts, homelessness. But it's the current Adams Mine dump debate that led me to stumble across him.

He's got my vote because he has the ecologically sane alternative to our garbage problem. Mel Lastman's idea is to pay $1 billion of public money over the next 20 years to dump 20 million tonnes of Toronto's garbage into a big hole in the ground.

North York Mirror, Sept. 1:
Environmentalist seeks mayoralty
"The thing I've heard from a lot of Torontonians is that putting moose on the streets does not make a good mayor," he said. "People are saying we need more than a mascot for mayor, we need substantial solutions."

Globe and Mail, Aug. 31:
Worm worker aims to win mayoralty
"The reason I've decided to throw my hat in the ring today is because of the enormous concern I've heard from Torontonians, specifically on the garbage issue in the last few weeks, and on the smog issue and the homelessness issue as well," he said.

NOW Magazine, Aug. 24 - 30:
Green activist ponders trashing Mayor Mel
"In a democracy, it's important during elections to have this kind of debate," says Gomberg, who was formerly an Edmonton city councillor.

National Post, Aug. 23:
Mayor may have new challenger for job - by Don Wanagas

"What's really brought this group togther is the garbage issue," the 45-year-old environmental activist said of the plan to dump 1.3 million tonnes of Toronto trash into an abandoned iron ore pit near Kirkland Lake each year. "There's a sense of outrage, of astonishment, that Mayor Lastman and the council would support this harebrained scheme to ship our garbage 600 kilometres north and throw it in a big hole in the ground. That's the old way of doing things... We should be coming up with approaches that are sustainable and ecologically sensitive and that the city can be proud of."

The Toronto Star, Aug. 23:
Mayoral hopeful already talking trash - by Karen Palmer
Gomberg sees gridlock, transit, the growing gap between rich and poor, homelessness and smog as issues where Lastman has a poor record. "There really does need to be someone who can get in the ring, who can really talk about these issues and really challenge the mayor on his perspective," he said.
